From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear North Middlesex Families,

Many of you will be aware that there has been a huge increase in the popularity of vaping or ‘Juuling’ this year. This week the FDA announced “A major crackdown on the vaping industry” for marketing to children. While this is encouraging, the fact remains that vaping remains incredibly popular with teenagers, many of whom believe that there are no health consequences associated with vaping. There is growing evidence that vaping is highly addictive and potentially carcinogenic, but vaping remains appealing to young people in terms of packaging, flavors, and the ability to use discreetly.

With vaping now so popular with teens, it is important that we are able to look for the signs of vaping in our own children. Vaping, or possession of vape paraphernalia, is not allowed at NM, and many of the students who have been disciplined for breaking this rule have been caught because they do not believe that teachers will recognize vaping devices. If you have not already done so, I would suggest familiarizing yourself with this paraphernalia through a google image search. There are also a number of parenting sites with advice on what to look out for (e.g. sensitivity to caffeine, copious sipping of liquids, USB devices charging in computer ports- note, some of the parenting sites are put up by the vaping industry, so be aware of the source). Something else to keep in mind is that any substance can be vaporized, so teens may be vaping THC or other drugs.

Please be aware that we are taking this issue very seriously at NM. The Townsend police ran a training for staff in the fall, and we are being proactive in monitoring bathrooms and other common areas. Because vaping is so insidious, it is important that we all work together to have frank conversations with students about vaping, and continue to keep ourselves up-to-date with this rapidly evolving phenomenon.

Please feel free to contact me with any thoughts or questions.
