From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear North Middlesex Families,

On behalf of the faculty and staff, I would like to express our deep sadness for all of those involved in the school shooting in Florida this week. This is not the first school shooting in America this year, and as parents and educators, we all worry about the frequency of these horrifying events.

I want to reassure you that safety is our highest priority at NM, and throughout our district. We have regular police walkthroughs during the week, and work closely with local law enforcement whenever we have a concern.

Our district implemented the A.L.i.C.E. protocol approximately 5 years ago. All students and faculty have been trained on the A.L.i.C.E. protocol by our district team of A.L.i.C.E. trainers made up of law enforcement from out 3 towns and school personnel in our district and we have drills throughout the year to practice our protocols.

A.L.i.C.E. is an acronym for:

A - Alert, be alert to your surroundings and notify authorities when something is out of the ordinary or danger arises.

L - Lockdown, if the situation arises and you can not evacuate, lockdown wherever you are and barricade the doors.  This will create a stronghold while you wait for law enforcement.

i - Inform, being able to give real time updates.  These updates allow you to make sound decisions on how to react and what steps, if any, to take next.

C - Counter, is used as a last resort, when evacuating is not an option.  This is the use of simple, proactive techniques, should you be confronted by the attacker.

E - Evacuate, the goals is to put as much time and distance as possible between you and the attacker.  Decisions are made if you can safely evacuate and remove yourself from the danger zone as quickly as possible.

I encourage students and their families to speak up where they have concerns.
