No Taxation Without Representation!

Teaching sophomores about taxation is not always easy because most fifteen-year-olds have yet to pay their first tax bill! However, Ms. Piatelli found a creative way to get her class to relate to the sense of injustice, which often surrounds taxation discourse.

Ms. Piatelli’s sophomores were presented with a document at the beginning of class informing them that they would be charged $0.10 for every photocopied sheet their teacher gave them in class. Her class responded with such outrage that she had to end the activity after ten minutes! “It was great to see them so passionate,” Piatelli says. “Now they have something to relate to when we talk about historical tax controversies such as the stamp tax and really have them understanding the actions of the colonists .”

Welcoming Mr. Pearson... our newest history teacher at NM!

Q:
What is your favorite part of teaching at NM so far?
A: My favorite part of teaching at NM so far has been getting to know the students. I especially love getting to know what types of things outside of school interests them, especially when we share a common hobby. I find it makes my interactions with them all the more personal.

Q:  What is your favorite type of cheese and why?
A: My favorite cheese is pepper jack. I enjoy its blend of spices paired with its smooth and creamy texture, especially on a burger.
