NM Knows!

Principal Taylor's weekly look at the academic and creative world that is NM

It's April 13

Choir Conquers All

This past week, NM's Treble, Chamber, & Concert Choirs traveled to New York City to perform in one of the most musical places known for its cinema, electronic billboards, and Broadway theatre.  The groups performed a dazzling set at the Riverside Church. Taking on the city that never sleeps, each of NM's three choirs earned gold medals. In addition to their outstanding victory, Treble and Chamber Choir also received the adjudicator award for totals in the 95th percentile or better.

Overall Treble Choir placed first, while Chamber and Concert Choir placed second in their respective categories. These three Gold Medals have earned our Choirs the opportunity to sing as members of the National Youth Choir once again at either Carnegie Hall in NYC or the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. We congratulate Mrs. Blake and her students for their exceptional feat.

Off to Prison
Last week I accompanied Ms. Connor’s sociology class to MCI Shirley to take part in their Project Youth field trip. I was expecting a ‘scared straight’ experience, but what I got was an insight into the layers of addiction and impulsiveness that ruined these young men's’ lives. All of the prisoners who spoke and answered questions were serving life sentences for murder. What was most powerful for me was that all of their stories were connected by three common threads; addiction, acting without stepping back to think, and not being able to ask for help when their lives were begin to disintegrate around them.
