From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear North Middlesex Families,

I would like to make you all aware that we will be hosting “Unguarded – A Conversation with Chris Herren,” on November 18th @ 9:30am. A local community organization, NM Cares, is sponsoring this event for our students.

Chris Herren is a former NBA/Boston Celtic basketball player, motivational speaker, author and sobriety advocate, who struggled with substance abuse for much of his basketball career. Alcohol and drug-free since August 1, 2008, he has refocused his life to put his sobriety and family above all else. With the hope of reaching just one person and making an impact in their life, Chris travels the United States sharing his story. Since 2009, he has spoken to over 500,000 people nationwide and is thankful for each day that he can share his story to further a message of hope.

Following a DVD highlighting his basketball career and journey to sobriety, Chris will touch on such topics as driving under the influence, gateway drugs, peer pressure & bullying.  The main message to students will be to “BE YOU”, to be comfortable with who you are, know you are perfect just the way you are, and you don’t need substances to change yourself.

All students will be attending this event. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s guidance counselor or an administrator.

Sincerely,

Isaac Taylor

Principal

NM NOTES AND UPDATES

Free used books for students and families

As part of the preparation for our move to the new building, we have weeded a number of books from the library and our academic departments. Students and families are welcome to add any books they are interested in taking to their personal collections! These books will be on display in room 58 (near the side sport entrance) next Tuesday 10/31 and Wednesday 11/1 until 5:00 pm. First come, first serve.

NMRS Scholarship Committee Meeting - Wed., Nov 2 at 7pm, Room 1. Please join us to find out what we do and how you can help make a difference in the life of a graduating NM senior going on to higher education. We're also looking for new committee members, as many of our members are moving on at the end of the school year. For more information, please visit our website at: http://nmrsscholarship.org/.

FAFSA Update

In the past, FAFSA was available January 1st. Under the new deadlines, Fafsa became available October 1st. Families can apply for aid for 2017-2018 starting last weekend, using their 2015 taxes. This is important because according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, many colleges plan to offer aid packages much earlier, as early as December, to students who apply early action.

Fitchburg State University will be hosting a FAFSA Day on Sunday, November 6th, at 1:00pm, at the Antonucci Science Complex, 333 North Street, Fitchburg, MA.   Visit https://www.masfaa.org/fafsa-day-register/  to register and learn more.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a federally required form for all students seeking financial aid, including grants and loans.  At FAFSA Day, local financial aid experts will guide you through how to fill out the FAFSA, and you will have a chance to ask questions about your specific circumstances.  All seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Please reach out to your child’s guidance counsellor with any questions or concerns.
