From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear North Middlesex Families,

Thank you to the 250 plus parents and students who responded to my short survey on the high school schedule over the past week. If you have not had the chance to do so, please complete this survey by Sunday October 16 at midnight.

The data from this survey will be discussed at the first of two community meetings on Wednesday October 19 at 5:30 pm at the high school. There will also be a chance to discuss the benefits and challenges of the current schedule. At the second community meeting on Wednesday November 9 at 5:30 pm, I will put forward my recommendations for moving forward, based on the feedback I will have received from students, parents, and staff.

In next Monday’s issue of NM Knows! I will shine a light on the innovations taking place in our library to support instruction at NM.

Extended Family Resource Night

Hello Parents/Guardians of all middle and high school students. NMRSD is presenting an Extended Family Resource & Support Night on 10/20/16 from 6:00-8:00 at the Nissitissit Middle School.

This support night is intended for any and all extended family members (grandparents, aunts/uncles, siblings or relatives) who are in the primary caregiver role with one or more students. All parents/guardians in the district are welcome to attend. If you have any questions, please contact Nissitissit counselors Melissa Thomas (mthomas@nmrsd.org) or Natasha Santiago (nsantiago@nmrsd.org).

Fafsa Update

In the past, Fafsa was available January 1st. Under the new deadlines, Fafsa became available October 1st. Families can apply for aid for 2017-2018 starting last weekend, using their 2015 taxes. This is important because according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, many colleges plan to offer aid packages much earlier, as early as December, to students who apply early action.

Fitchburg State University will be hosting a FAFSA Day on Sunday, November 6th, at 1:00pm, at the Antonucci Science Complex, 333 North Street, Fitchburg, MA.   Visit https://www.masfaa.org/fafsa-day-register/  to register and learn more.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a federally required form for all students seeking financial aid, including grants and loans.  At FAFSA Day, local financial aid experts will guide you through how to fill out the FAFSA, and you will have a chance to ask questions about your specific circumstances.  All seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Please reach out to your child’s guidance counsellor with any questions or concerns.

PSAT’s will be given on Wednesday, October 19th. All juniors will be taking the exam at no charge. Sophomores are also welcome to take the test for a $15 fee.  Please sign up in Guidance.  PSAT practice booklets have been given out to all juniors and offered to sophomores.  These booklets are available in Guidance.

The NM Student Council is sponsoring a Blood Drive on Monday, October 17th. This drive is open to students 16-years and older. Written permission from a parent or guardian is required for 16-year olds; however, parental permission is not required for students 17 years and older. All students must bring identification. We encourage parents/guardians to discuss blood donation and keep communication open with your son or daughter. Although most donors have uneventful donations, it is important to be aware of reactions that are common after blood donations such as lightheadedness, dizziness, or an upset stomach. Less commonly, a donor may faint after blood donation. Young, first-time and/or low-weight donors are more likely to experience reactions than other donors.

In order to improve the donation experience for your son or daughter, it is important that they get a good night’s sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast (and lunch), and drink a few extra glasses of water. If you have any questions, please contact the nurses' office. Thank you for your support.

The NM Student Council is sponsoring a community Blood Drive on Tuesday, November 8th. This drive is open to all community members.  It is important for all donors to eat a good meal and drink plenty of water before donation.  Community members can also preregister with RAPIDPASS at redcrossblood.org/RapidPass.  Note: RapidPass cannot be completed prior to the date of the drive or by using a mobile device. Thank  you for your support.

Student Athlete Blood Donors

Student athletes should wait about 12 hours or more to resume strenuous exercise after blood donation, depending on how they feel.  There is a temporary loss of fluids after donation which the body replaces within 24 hours or sooner if extra fluids are consumed.  As a precaution, we are asking students not to donate on the same day of a competition or strenuous practice.

If you have or plan on taking photos at any of the NM athletic events, if you would be so kind to email them to jbunnell@nmrsd.org so I may put them on display on the monitor in the athletic hall.

If you or someone you knows has any gently used crutches that may be lying around the athletic department is always looking for extra sets.  You can drop off at the front office to the attention of Mr. Bunnell.

Thank you in advance for supporting NM Athletics!

Injuries- As the season is now in high gear, injuries are occurring both minor and major.  Please make sure that your son/daughter reports any injuries to the coach and trainer so the injury can be assessed and addressed.  Parents please remember to inform the nurse’s office of any information that is important so the school can best accommodate your child.

Equipment Care- All athletes need to remember to bring their uniforms and equipment home after use to be clean.  Please wash thoroughly, and let uniforms and equipment air dry.  Using a dryer can damage uniforms and equipment shortening their life and effectiveness.   Thank you for helping the department better serve your children!
