From the Principal’s Desk…

Dear North Middlesex Families,

Our Eighth Grade Open House is coming up on Thursday November 3, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. This is an opportunity for middle school students and their parents to take in the academic and extracurricular opportunities at NM. The evening will begin in the auditorium, where parents and students will be introduced to the department chairs, and I will take a few moments to share the vision and direction of the school. Following these introductions, parents and students can make their own way around the school (maps will be provided). Each department will have staff and students available to answer questions, there will be displays, sample lessons in progress, and activities. There will also be an activities fair, Pat the Patriot will be on hand, and the school will be full of our current students.

Please encourage your high school children to attend this evening and support our school. Teachers are looking for students to help out in departments, at the activities fair, and to help families navigate the school!

At this week’s community meeting, we looked at a summary of the data from the schedule survey. If you were not able to attend this meeting, you can review the feedback here. As a result of this meeting, I have a number of questions that I will be asking staff and students in focus groups in the coming weeks. Our second community meeting will take place on Wednesday November 9 at 5:30 pm. At this meeting I will discuss the feedback I received from these groups, and put forward my recommendations for moving forward, based on the feedback I will have received from students, parents, and staff.

Student Blood Drive Update!

The NM Student Council held a student blood drive on Monday, October 17th. Our goal was to collect 43 pints of blood and our students were able to make 64 appointments.  There were some no shows, but we were still able to register 52 donors.  We did have 10 deferrals, but everyone that made it through histories was able to donate successfully.  By the end of the day we had performed 38 whole blood procedures and 4 power red cell procedures for a total of 45 productive pints of blood.

Fafsa Update

In the past, Fafsa was available January 1st. Under the new deadlines, Fafsa became available October 1st. Families can apply for aid for 2017-2018 starting last weekend, using their 2015 taxes. This is important because according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, many colleges plan to offer aid packages much earlier, as early as December, to students who apply early action.

Fitchburg State University will be hosting a FAFSA Day on Sunday, November 6th, at 1:00pm, at the Antonucci Science Complex, 333 North Street, Fitchburg, MA.   Visit https://www.masfaa.org/fafsa-day-register/  to register and learn more.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is a federally required form for all students seeking financial aid, including grants and loans.  At FAFSA Day, local financial aid experts will guide you through how to fill out the FAFSA, and you will have a chance to ask questions about your specific circumstances.  All seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Please reach out to your child’s guidance counsellor with any questions or concerns.
