(IT"S OCTOBER 3rd)

The Ball's in your Court!

In some areas of life, self-service can make us think of a cheaper or less desirable option. But in Mrs. Hillman’s math classes, students help themselves to a better education! Her classroom is designed to allow students to access everything they need to be successful. At a buffet-style table, students can borrow pens and pencils, access resources for class, collect graded assignments, and find make up work and notes if they were absent.

Mrs. Hillman wants to empower students. “If they need a protractor, or the work they missed last class, they shouldn’t have to put their hand up and wait for me to help them,” Hillman says. “I want to put my time into helping students to understand math. By organizing my classroom to empower students, I am able to spend much more of my time on what matters.”

Service Learning Spotlight of the Week: NOLA

The New Orleans Service Learning Program, more commonly referred to as NOLA, is perhaps the most known service learning group in the school. The goal of this group is to aid in the relief and restoration of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Region following natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the recent flooding throughout Louisiana. This group of 45 students will be traveling to Louisiana over February vacation in order to work with United Saints, a New Orleans based volunteer organization that aids in the disaster relief in and around the Baton Rouge area. This year’s coordinators are Kevin Lundstrom, Josh McGee, Teehan McGinness, Owen Wetherell, Zach Libonate, and Nicole Whelpley. Most recently, the group ran their annual Fund Fest, raising over $5,500. The group will run many events this year to help fund their trip. We will keep you updated with their upcoming events, make sure to show your support!
