NM Knows

It is our pleasure to introduce to you, NM Knows, a look into the creative and academic world that lies within these four walls. Welcome.

Coming Home to Advisory

Good morning North Middlesex! Beginning in the early 2000's, many schools began eliminating traditional homerooms in an effort to dedicate more 'time on learning'. NM moved away from homerooms in 2011, opting instead to have students go directly to their first period class, where daily attendance was taken, the pledge and moment of silence observed, and announcements read.

As with any trend in education, sometimes we do not realize what we have lost until it is gone! Many educators now feel strongly that building positive, purposeful and lasting relationships between staff and students is a critical element in embedding a positive student culture focused on success and well being.

This year we have brought back homeroom with a twist, by developing a daily curriculum that students access in ten minute advisories every morning, as well as bimonthly extended advisories. The curriculum was developed this summer by a dedicated team of teachers, and is a ‘living curriculum’ that can respond to the emerging needs of students.

The purpose of the NM Advisory  program is to build community, develop meaningful relationships and foster personal growth through constructive daily interactions. There will be daily themes (Motivational Monday, Ted Talk Tuesday, Worldwide Wednesdays, Thankful Thursdays, and Fun Fact Friday), and the curriculum for each month is tied to our 21st century learning objectives (for example, September is Citizenship month where we focus on being a part of the NM and wider community, and November is management, where students develop their own short and long term goals).

Students are an essential part of the process of ensuring that advisory is successful. It is encouraged that students offer suggestions for how we can increase the positive impact of this program in the coming months and years.
